Welcome to my blog on mathematics in wood sculpture. This blog is inspired by my own recent efforts in creating wood scuptures of mathematical functions and by my work on a reference book titled CRC Standard Curves and Surfaces with Mathematica, 2nd Edition.
I intend to cover as much of the existing work related to this topic on the web as available. Although a lot of interesting mathematical sculpture work is being done in media other than wood, I will confine myself to wood realizations of mathematical functions. With its variations in color, texture, and grain, wood presents an interesting contrast to the absolute determinism of the mathematical functions being represented. The term "sculpture" will be taken liberally, not just works produced by manual wood sculpting tools, but also works produced by power wood tools and works produced by assembling simple wood parts.
I will interlace blog posts on different realizations of mathematical functions in wood sculpture with ideas and commentary on techniques, historical background, interesting uses of wood, and other related topics. Hopefully those who visit this site will find the links to view mathematical wood sculpture on the web and will perhaps find inspiration to delve into this particular art form themselves.
